"I've chosen to have a role that combines challenging technical work and communication."

Q. Why did you join Watson Wyatt?

A. While at university, I visited a Watson Wyatt information session. I immediately gained the impression that Watson Wyatt is all about its people, and I could see how genuinely passionate and dedicated all the visiting representatives felt about working there. They were also all very friendly and approachable and I was confident I'd found what I was looking for.

Q. What does your role involve? What's your day to day schedule like?

A. I've chosen to have a role that combines challenging technical work and communication. I work on a vast variety of projects and clients and there is always a new challenge waiting for me around the corner. Some of the work that I have been engaged in includes: actuarial valuations for a variety of funds (large and small, pension and lump sum); employee option valuations; reviewing employee benefits accounting results for numerous subsidiaries of a large multinational; and co-ordinating regular meetings for the practice to discuss pertinent industry issues, amongst other things.

Q. Are you involved in any Watson Wyatt social activities?

A. Yes, both the formally organised and informal kind. Every month, Watson Wyatt hosts drinks in the boardroom and every quarter, we have a big function, which in the past has included bowling nights, trivia nights and a dress-up evening.

As well as the activities that Watson Wyatt organises, we often organise non-Watson Wyatt funded events, from karaoke to the occasional weekend away.

Q. What is the culture like at Watson Wyatt?

A. The culture at Watson Wyatt is one of excellence — always providing excellent work for our clients. In this time of financial crisis, our clients turn to us for support and knowledge and we provide that advice in the most effective way. As well as fostering strong teamwork, Watson Wyatt provides mentoring, which is a great way to learn new skills, and grow confidence, on the job. You are encouraged to ask questions, and everyone is patient and understanding.

Q. What did you study in Uni and how did it prepare you for working at Watson Wyatt?

A. I studied a Bachelor of Commerce with Honours majoring in Actuarial Studies at the University of Melbourne. This education path has helped me develop astute analytical and problem solving skills to evaluate and provide creative solutions for our clients. The Honours degree also facilitated a more advanced knowledge of Excel and practical application of the technical study gained from the undergraduate degree. Most importantly, majoring in Actuarial Studies has fast-tracked my study towards qualifying as an actuary.
