Philip wanted to be a ninja when he grew up, but later discovered that a career as an actuary would be far more exciting. "Watson Wyatt really appreciates what you want to achieve as an individual." |
Q. Is working at Watson Wyatt what you thought it would be like?
A. I wanted to join Watson Wyatt because I was impressed with the friendliness of the people I'd met. Watson Wyatt also provided the opportunity to work in superannuation which is what I had always wished for. On my first day, I was greeted by friendly folks and was really excited with the type of work coming my way almost immediately. It's been over a year now, and as I've stepped up in knowledge and experience; the work is new and challenging. It's been a great ride so far!
Q. What job skills do you have to contribute to your work?
A. My work is fairly technical and I apply the actuarial skills acquired at Uni every day. I'm currently an actuarial analyst and I'm involved in quantifying superannuation funds in terms of their liabilities and future risk. The work is dynamic because there's been quite a lot of changes in superannuation legislation which has changed the way we do things. As well, the economic climate has impacted superannuation, adding a further dimension to the work I do.
Q. How has Watson Wyatt supported you with your career goals or things outside of work?
A. I think Watson Wyatt really appreciates what you want to achieve as an individual. At the start of each year, there's always the opportunity to talk with one of the more senior guys about what you hope to achieve in the coming year. I'm currently at the stage of trying to pass my actuarial exams and thankfully Watson Wyatt provides financial assistance and study leave. Outside of work, I enjoy my sports. Watson Wyatt encourages us to just get out there — I'll be joining the Watson Wyatt triathlon team again this year.
Q. What do you enjoy most about working at Watson Wyatt?
A. We've got a great group of people at Watson Wyatt and we enjoy the opportunity to catch up with each other socially as well as at Watson Wyatt social events.
Q. What are the people/managers like at Watson Wyatt?
A. Friendly, fun, fantastic! But when things get busy, we can count on each other to get things done. The people structure is fairly flat which means I work quite closely with the more senior people.
