Supreme Court Decision on Waiting Times
On June 9, 2005, the public vs. private health care debate in Canada heated up with the release of the Supreme Court of Canada’s decision in Chaoulli. The ruling concerned the validity of Quebec legislation preventing a provincial resident from securing insurance for private healthcare services already available under the public health care plan. The SCC's decision raises a number of immediate concerns for plan sponsors, and while the decision was restricted to Quebec, this result could eventually become applicable to the other provinces, with varying impact.
Régie Seeks Input on Pension Funding Changes
In a Working Paper released on May 24, the Régie des Rentes du Québec acknowledges that pension funding obligations have become a significant and increasing cost for businesses. The Working Paper seeks public input on eight proposed new measures designed to ease the pension funding burden, improve benefit security, and promote increased pension coverage.
