Quebec Legislation Could Reshape Pension Landscape
On June 14, 2006, the Government of Quebec introduced Bill 30, An Act to amend the Supplemental Pension Plans Act, particularly with respect to the funding and administration of pension plans. The Bill contains significant amendments to the Supplemental Pension Plans Act (SPPA). While most of these will not come into effect until 2010, the legislation has the potential to significantly change the pension regulatory regime for Quebec-registered plans, and potentially for Quebec members of all pension plans.

Supreme Court Limits Pension Class Actions
On May 18, 2006 the Supreme Court of Canada released its decision in Bisaillon v. Concordia University. The case raises a number of interesting issues with respect to the use of class actions to settle pension disputes and the jurisdiction of courts to render decisions in such disputes. It confirms that class actions cannot be used to circumvent grievance procedures enshrined in collective bargaining agreements.
