Mandatory Retirement Revisited
Over 10 years ago the Supreme Court of Canada sanctioned mandatory retirement in universities and hospitals. Yet one decade later, the media is reporting labour shortages in these sectors. Demographic projections and recent research are examined in order to test the current validity of traditional arguments both for and against mandatory retirement.

Mandatory Retirement: Legislative/Legal Environment
Quebec and Manitoba abolished mandatory retirement in the early 1980s but other Canadian jurisdictions have not followed their lead. The legal status of mandatory retirement across the country is considered in order to provide a context for the debate as to whether mandatory retirement continues to be relevant.

Recent Mandatory Retirement Recommendations
Recent federal and Ontario studies have also revisited mandatory retirement. We focus on several key recommendations regarding mandatory retirement recently made by the Canadian Human Rights Act Review Panel and the Ontario Human Rights Commission.
