Before Quebec developed the life income fund (LIF) in the early 1990s, the portability options available to terminated pension plan members were limitedto a locked-in registered retirement savings plan (locked-in RRSP) or a locked-in retirement account (LIRA). The latter was not available in all Canadian jurisdictions.
