Adult Interdependent Partners: who are they and what do they mean to you?
Alberta's recently passed Bill 30-2, the Adult Interdependent Relationships Act, has created a new class of relationship through its recognition of "adult interdependent partners" (AIPs). In addition, the Act extends rights and obligations to individuals in such relationships that are not available in other Canadian jurisdictions. Although Bill 30-2's greatest impact will be on family, wills and estates law, it also contains amendments to the Employment Pension Plans Act. This Special Memorandum examines how the introduction of AIPs will effect individuals, employers and plan sponsors.
