Insurance and Financial Services

What's it really like to work within the Insurance and Financial Services Practice of Watson Wyatt?

Why do people join and why do they stay?

Some of our associates offer their insights.

Colm Guiry

Colm Guiry, who is a consultant in the Insurance and Financial Services Practice in our Irish office, joined the Firm as a graduate in 1999 after attending a recruitment presentation in University College Dublin where he was studying for a degree in Actuarial and Financial Studies:

"Working for a team of eight members means that I get exposed to a wide range of different areas of work - financial management, mergers and acquisitions, reinsurance, market analysis and product development."

"These various types of work require different skills; for example financial reporting work can be quite technical at times, such as when I am carrying out a break-down of a company's profit each month into different items of experience. At the other extreme, some of the projects I am involved with in other areas require very little calculation work but instead a lot of reading, research and report-writing."

"Another part of my role is that I have responsibility for our actuarial system VIP. VIP is a modelling and projection system that we use an awful lot in the Practice but it is also used by a range of Irish insurance companies. As well as assisting in the marketing of VIP, quite often I get contacted by someone in a company using VIP to discuss different methods of modelling, for example, a new product or a change in the structure of the modelling assumptions."

Sarah Teehan

Sarah is a consultant in the Insurance and Financial services practice in our Dublin office. She joined Watson Wyatt in September 2003 having just graduated from University College Dublin with a degree in Actuarial and Financial studies.

"I joined Watson Wyatt because the mix of actuarial and consultancy work appealed to me. Since joining, I have not regretted my decision. I work in a small dynamic team so I get the opportunity to be involved in a lot of different types of work. Along with my enjoyment of the working environment here in the office, there is also a lively social atmosphere among the staff and there are many opportunities to have fun with your colleagues"

"Looking toward the future, I hope to make my way through the exams and qualify as an Actuary. As I'm still relatively new to the company, I'm concentrating on achieving the correct work-study-social balance. At times this can be difficult but Watson Wyatt provide us with excellent study support and it is just a matter of self discipline."
