There is growing consensus amongst institutional investors that taking account of sustainability and governance issues can help enhance long-term shareholder value. In practice incorporating environmental, social and corporate governance (ESG) considerations into investment and ownership decisions may involve a variety of approaches, however the two key styles gaining traction with institutional investors are:

  • Active ownership. Investors (or their agents) use shareholder rights (engagement and voting) to improve the management of ESG risks within investee companies.
  • Sustainable investments. Investment strategies that seek to add value by exploiting opportunities arising from sustainability themes, such as climate change, demographics and natural resource constraints. Strategies span various asset classes including private and public equities, fixed income, real estate, infrastructure and new asset classes such as carbon and timber.

Through our dedicated sustainable investment team we help our clients identify the most appropriate way that sustainability and governance can be incorporated into their investment approach. Specifically we have helped clients to:

  • Define their sustainable investment beliefs and strategy
  • Improve trustee knowledge and understanding
  • Assess compliance with best practice standards
  • Select sustainable investment management products to achieve specific aims
  • Monitor investment managers’ active ownership practices

We also produce regular thought pieces which are intended to provoke discussion and debate amongst trustees, exploring how sustainability and governance could impact their investments:
