Puerto Rico - INSIDER highlights
There are several articles in this month’s edition which will be of interest to Puerto Rico employers.
- The main article found here analyzes the effect that HIPAA will have on
American employers, including such issues as whether health benefits administration
should be
centralized
or decentralized, whether employers should be self-insuring health benefits
and whether health benefits administration should be outsourced.
- The article titled "FASB
and EITF Tackle Stock and Pension Accounting" discusses
some of the areas the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) intends
to investigate in the coming months. These
areas include
whether
stock options issued to employees should be “expensed”, and if so, on what
valuation basis. FASB also intends to take another look at some of the FAS
87 and FAS 132 rules for pension plan accounting and disclosure. Exposure
drafts on both of these areas should be published by the end of 2003. We
have enclosed another article on the future of stock options, that you may
find interesting.
- The article titled "New
Medicare Framework Faces Tough Fight in Congress" outlines
some of the discussions underway in Congress about changing Medicare to allow
beneficiaries to choose private
plans and
to provide
prescription
drug coverage.
