
Economic and Monetary Union in Europe

There is now a very high probability that Economic and Monetary Union (EMU) will proceed as planned on 1 January 1999 and is likely to cover 11 of the 15 countries who are members of the European Union. Compulsory use of the new single currency, the Euro, is deferred until January 2002 but most businesses operating in Europe (including those operating in countries not in EMU) are likely to be using the Euro prior to that date.
