Philippines:

National provident fund

During the summer it was announced that the Philippines’ government is planning to introduce legislation that will result in the creation of a new mandatory national provident fund that will provide retirement income to non-government employees over and above that provided by the Social Security System (SSS). It is intended that the system will operate on a defined contribution basis. The SSS is planning to publish its proposals this autumn and it is hoped that Congress will debate them in 1999.
