More changes to EPF rules for foreign workers

On 1 August 1998, a new Employees’ Provident Fund (EPF) regulation came into effect which made foreign workers, including expatriates, liable for employee contributions at 11% of remuneration to the EPF. A revision to the new regulation has now been introduced. Under this, some categories of foreign workers who were originally required to contribute to the EPF with effect from 1 August 1998 have now been excluded. Most importantly for multinationals this revision affects foreign workers with work permits or expatriates holding temporary work permits whose monthly salaries exceed RM2,500.

It is understood that companies yet to register or pay contributions in respect of employees in these categories will not now be required to do so, and that companies which have already made contributions in respect of expatriates already registered can apply for a refund.
