Integrated Disability
Management Around
the World 2000/2001
In previous years, Watson Wyatt's
Staying@Work®
integrated disability
management research showed that
U.S. employers face increasingly
difficult challenges in attracting and
retaining employees in an
environment of record low
unemployment. Many of these
employers found that keeping
employees healthy and at work helps
ensure a stable workforce and eases
the burden of absence and
disability-related costs on employers.
Integrated disability management
(IDM) maximises employee
contributions to the success of the
company and reduces costs associated
with employee absenteeism.
Based on the results of the first
ever Staying@Work
Around the
World survey, it is clear that
organisations around the world are
facing similar challenges: an aging
workforce, a shortage of new workers
and increasing demand for
productivity. To be competitive in the
worldwide marketplace, employers
must adopt a worldwide view of their
HR issues, including absence
management. As business becomes
more global, employers may apply the
integrated disability management lessons learned by U.S. companies to
their operations throughout the world.
While specific practices and policies
will be determined in large part by
local conditions, the experience of
U.S. companies can provide insight
into what does - and does not - work
in disability management.
