Following the disappearance of the rigid controls exercised
by the previous command economies of Central and Eastern
Europe, the young democracies in the region have had to
come to terms with a new set of realities. The transition
has been a painful one in many instances. However, the
opportunities offered by emerging markets quickly became
the focus of significant multinational corporate activity,
with companies keen either to gain market share among
the new acquisitive consumers or to capitalise on the
skilled, but relatively low-cost labour resources. more
