Employer Action Code: Act

Subsidies to boost employment approved

On February 13, 2009, the Slovak government approved subsidies on companies' compulsory health insurance and social security contributions. These measures came into effect from March 2009 and will remain in place until the end of 2010.

Key Details

The new subsidies have the following characteristics:
  • To qualify for the subsidy, employers must have reduced working hours or suspended operations but continued to pay workers at least 60 percent of current salary.
  • The subsidies aim to enable employers to meet compulsory health and social security contributions.
 Background

These measures have been implemented as a response to the current crisis in the Slovakian labor market. According to Slovakia’s Social Affairs and Family Office, unemployment rose to 8.39 percent in December 2008, increasing by 0.59 percent from just the month before.
