Medicare has long had significant influence over the retiree medical benefits employers offer. Today, Medicare Part D makes available a variety of plan options to retirees and opens new avenues for employers. By enabling employers to move from defined benefit group health plans to account-based individual health plans, Medicare creates the potential for employers to reduce open-ended retiree medical liabilities while at the same time helping retirees obtain comprehensive medical insurance.   [US - March 2007]
