Human resources professionals are accustomed to dealing with incremental, continual change. It comes with the territory and helps makes the work interesting. Sometimes, however, a major shift occurs — one that forces HR to rethink the conventional wisdom about managing a workforce and the workplace.
Newsweek magazine announced one such shift when it declared 1984 The Year of the Yuppie. The last of the baby boomers were hitting the job market. Pay for performance and executive compensation were becoming hot topics. New technologies were revolutionizing the way people work.
Today, we’re on the verge of another quantum leap. Baby boomers are reaching retirement age, but they aren’t ready to retire. Their children are joining the workforce en masse. Moreover, the United States is experiencing an influx of immigrants from around the world. Despite this expanding pool of workers, corporate America still struggles to find top talent to fill critical jobs.
Clearly these trends are changing the shape of the workforce, making it much more diverse. Enterprises that understand the trends and adapt their HR strategies to embrace this greater diversity can position themselves to build a highly motivated, productive workforce. Employee programs that take into account the new demographics will enable these enterprises to attract and retain top-notch employees who will help drive business success.
