For many sponsors, including very large plans, indexing large cap U.S. equity investments has been a durable, time-tested strategy. However, the capitalization weighting structure of the S&P 500 and other indices only exaggerated the losses that were suffered in the market downturn after the peak in March 2000.

On March 6, Watson Wyatt hosted a web conference, “Building Blocks: Can Index Investment Produce Better Beta?” to discuss the different approaches to plain vanilla index strategies.

The presentation answered questions on the different types of benefits that alternative approaches can provide and what is required to make them work effectively.
